    Book of Love,er…Ads from 1960

Posted by admin on February 25th, 2010 and filed under gazette classifieds | No Comments »

This Valentines Day we want to send a giant Valentine to the Pikes Peak Library Districts Special Collections not only because books and libraries are the greatest, but also because the PPLD also has such fantastic online resources such as free access to newspaperarchive.com, a service (which costs money for folks without a library card) that provides access to scads of old newspapers, including many from Colorado Springs, archived in PDF format for easy viewing.

Today we started poking around in old issues of the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph and decided to see what happened 50 years ago today. More than the headlines (Adolph Coors had been kidnapped, Horace Mann Jr. High School was getting an addition of four new classrooms) we noticed how many ads there were! Sadly, gone are the days. But 50 years ago: page after page of ads for May D&F and Fashion Bar and Hibbards and on and on and on. Many of the ads—wonderfully simple black and white art department drawings and paste-ups—were, of course, for Valentines Day.

Canadian Sandra Bell-Lundy began her career as a cartoonist by creating comics for her university campus newspaper, a women’s networking newsletter and some newspaper ads.

After developing a cartoon strip which was loosely based on a group of her friends, she self-syndicated to a number of southern Ontario dailies for four years.

In 1994, “Between Friends” attracted the attention of King Features and is now syndicated to nearly 130 newspapers worldwide such as the Toronto Star, the Montreal Gazette, the Calgary Herald, the Seattle Times, the Tuscon Citizen and the Houston Chronicle. In addition to Canada and the United States, it also appears in eleven countries as far and wide as Australia, India, South Africa, Jamaica and the United Arab Emirates.

“Between Friends” celebrates the essence and angst of three contemporary, forty-something women friends: Susan, Maeve and Kim.

“Between Friends” has been collected in two anthologies, “Hello, Daughter” (Plan Nine Publishing) and “Coffee, Tea and Reality” (Andrews and McMeel).

Born and raised in St. Catharines, Ontario, Sandra now resides in Welland with her husband, Tim, their children, Devin and Tara and a golden retriever named Newman.
